Wir tanzen im Wesentlichen „English Country Dances”. Historisch sind das Gesellschaftsänze aus der Zeit des Frühbarock, die erstmals 1651 vom englischen Musikverleger John Playford in seinem Buch „The English Dancing Master“ veröffentlicht wurden. Das Buch entwickelte sich zu einem Bestseller der bis 1728 in mehreren Auflagen erschien, später nur noch unter dem Titel „The Dancing Master“, und insgesamt etwa tausend verschiedene Tänze beschreibt.

Playford publizierte seine Tanzbücher anfangs für das durch Bürgerkriege (1642-1649) und das kurzlebige englische Commonwealth (1649-1659) unter Oliver Cromwell verunsicherte englische Bürgertum. In diesen unruhigen Zeiten erschien es vielen als sicher und erstrebenswert, Zerstreuung bei Hausmusik und Tanz in der Geborgenheit der eigenen vier Wände zu suchen. Die „English Country Dances“ sind vielfältig sowohl was die Zahl der Tanzpaare (von Tänzen für exakt zwei, drei oder vier Paare bis hin zu Kreis- und Reihentänzen für beliebig viele Tanzpaare ist alles vertreten) als auch die Komplexität der Tänze betrifft.

Neben den historischen Playford-Tänzen tanzen wir moderne English Country Dances, die von zeitgenössischen Choreographen im gleichen Stil entwickelt wurden und werden. Hier finden sich dann sowohl traumhafte Walzermelodien mit schwebenden Figuren als auch frechere Stücke, bei denen die Musik Einschläge aus Jazz und anderen modernen Richtungen bekommt. Generell wird getanzt was Spaß macht und allen gefällt.
